How to Reset the World on Your Project Zomboid Server

Last updated: September 18, 2026

Resetting the world wipes the map while keeping your server settings. This is useful when you want a fresh apocalypse without rebuilding your config or mod list.

What Gets Deleted

Path Contents
Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername>/The world: map chunks, buildings, loot, vehicles, and zombies. Deleting this resets the map.
Zomboid/db/<servername>.dbPlayer accounts, passwords, whitelist, and bans. Keep this if you want to keep accounts.
Zomboid/Server/<servername>.iniYour server config. Keep this so your settings are preserved.

The default server name is servertest, so the world folder is usually Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/servertest/.

Step 1: Back Up First

Download a copy of the Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername>/ folder. A wipe cannot be undone.

Step 2: Stop the Server

In the NolimitHost Game Panel, select your Project Zomboid server and stop it from the Console page. Edits to a running server's save folder are reverted on shutdown, which is the usual reason a wipe appears not to work.

Step 3: Delete the World Folder

  1. In the left sidebar, click Files and open Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/.
  2. Delete the world folder (for example servertest). You can rename it to servertest-backup instead if you want to keep it on the server.
  3. Start the server. Because the world folder is gone, Project Zomboid generates a brand-new world automatically.

Step 4: Change ResetID

After regenerating the world, change the ResetID value in servertest.ini to any new whole number. This tells clients the map is new; if you leave it unchanged, players can see ghost buildings and desynced areas from their old local map cache.

Partial Resets

Goal What to do
New map, keep player charactersCopy players.db out of the world folder, delete the folder, start the server once to generate a fresh world, stop it, then paste players.db back in.
New map, keep accounts and whitelistExactly as above for the world folder only, and leave Zomboid/db/<servername>.db untouched.
Refresh zombies and loot onlyDelete the zpop_*.bin files and the reanimated/ folder inside the world folder, keeping buildings and bases.
Important: Only delete Zomboid/db/<servername>.db if you also want to wipe player accounts, passwords, the whitelist, and the ban list. Leaving it alone keeps all of that.
Tip: A safe alternative to deleting is to give the server a new profile name, which makes Project Zomboid create a new world under that name and leaves the old one intact.
