How to Add Admins to Your Project Zomboid Server

Last updated: September 18, 2026

Admin access on a Project Zomboid server works differently from most games. Instead of a list of Steam IDs, you set an admin password, then log in as the built-in admin account and grant staff access to other players.

Step 1: Set the Admin Password

  1. Log in to the NolimitHost Game Panel, select your Project Zomboid server, and stop it from the Console page.
  2. Open the Startup tab and set the Admin Password field to a strong value. This is passed to the server as its -adminpassword launch argument.
  3. Save and start the server.
Important: On a managed panel the startup value is the source of truth. Using the in-game changepwd command will not persist, because the panel re-applies the admin password on every start.

Step 2: Log In as Admin

  1. Join your server.
  2. When prompted for credentials, use the username admin and the password you set.
  3. You now have the admin panel and console commands.

Step 3: Grant Access to Other Players

Use the server console or in-game chat to promote players. The relevant commands are:

Command Description
grantadmin "<username>"Grant full admin to a player.
setaccesslevel "<username>" <level>Set a player's access level. Common levels: admin, moderator, overseer, gm, observer, and none to revoke.
removeadmin "<username>"Remove admin access.

Access Levels

Level Typical use
adminFull control, including server settings and other admins.
moderatorKick, ban, and manage players.
overseerLimited staff role for watching the server.
gmGame master tools such as spawning items.
observerSpectate only.
noneRegular player; use this to revoke access.
Tip: Grant the lowest level that lets a person do their job. Use admin sparingly, since those accounts can change server settings and manage other staff.
