How to Install Mods on Your Project Zomboid Server

Last updated: September 18, 2026

Project Zomboid servers download and activate mods from the Steam Workshop. Two settings in servertest.ini control this, and both are required.

The Two Required Settings

Setting Value Purpose
WorkshopItemsNumeric Steam Workshop IDsTells the server which mods to download.
ModsText mod IDs from mod.infoTells the game which downloaded mods to activate.
Important: Setting only WorkshopItems downloads the files but activates nothing. Setting only Mods tries to activate mods that were never downloaded. Both must list the same mods.

Step 1: Collect the IDs

  1. Subscribe to each mod on Steam, then copy its numeric ID from the Workshop page URL. This is the WorkshopItems value.
  2. Find each mod's text ID in its mod.info file (the id= line). This is the Mods value.
Note: The mod ID is not the same as its folder name or its Workshop title. Always use the id= value from mod.info.

Step 2: Add Them to servertest.ini

  1. In the NolimitHost Game Panel, stop your server from the Console page.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Files and open Zomboid/Server/servertest.ini.
  3. Set both lines, separating each entry with a semicolon:
    WorkshopItems=2200148440;2169435993
    Mods=ModOne;ModTwo
  4. Save the file and start the server. It downloads the Workshop mods on the next start.
Tip: Keep the order of Mods matching WorkshopItems. Library mods that other mods depend on must be listed before the mods that need them.

Build 42 Note

On Build 42, mod IDs in the Mods list must begin with a backslash, for example Mods=\ModOne;\ModTwo. A config from Build 41 pasted straight in will often fail to load because of this.
