How to Change the Max Players on Your Project Zomboid Server

Last updated: September 18, 2026

The slot count for a Project Zomboid server is set with the MaxPlayers value in servertest.ini.

Step 1: Stop the Server

In the NolimitHost Game Panel, select your Project Zomboid server and stop it from the Console page.

Step 2: Set MaxPlayers

  1. In the left sidebar, click Files and open Zomboid/Server/servertest.ini.
  2. Find the MaxPlayers line and set the number of slots:
    MaxPlayers=16
  3. Save the file and start the server again.

Choosing a Slot Count

Project Zomboid simulates zombies, loot, and map chunks for every connected player, so the practical limit depends on your hardware more than any hard cap.

Server size Notes
Friends onlyA handful of slots is easy on almost any plan.
Small communityRuns well with adequate RAM; watch memory use as the world grows.
Large publicNeeds a lot of RAM and CPU, especially on Build 42 or with many mods.
Tip: Build 42 is heavier than Build 41 and many mods add load. If the server struggles, reduce the slot count, remove heavy mods, or lower the map and zombie settings. See Configure Your Server.
Important: The slot count is a server setting, not a per-account limit. Combined with a whitelist, it lets you control exactly who and how many can join.
