How to Reset Your Left 4 Dead 2 Server

Last updated: September 18, 2026

Resetting your Left 4 Dead 2 server reinstalls it from scratch, giving you a clean set of files. This is useful when the server is badly broken or you want to start fresh. A reset clears your custom files, so back up anything you want to keep first.

Step 1: Back Up Your Files

Download these from the server with SFTP, or save a panel backup if your plan includes one:

  • left4dead2/cfg/ - your server.cfg, mapcycle.txt, and SourceMod configs.
  • left4dead2/addons/ - MetaMod, SourceMod, and custom campaigns.
  • left4dead2/maps/ - any custom maps you uploaded.
Important: A reset deletes your config, plugins, and custom campaigns. Make sure your backup has finished before you continue.

Step 2: Reinstall the Server

  1. Log in to the NolimitHost Game Panel and select your L4D2 server.
  2. Stop the server from the Console page.
  3. Go to Configuration > Advanced > Reinstall Server and confirm.
  4. Wait for the reinstall to complete. The game files are downloaded again and custom files are cleared.

Step 3: Restore Your Setup

  1. Upload your backed-up cfg, addons, and maps folders back into left4dead2/.
  2. If your server.cfg holds a GSLT, confirm it is present again. See Change the Server Name for where the token goes.
  3. Start the server and confirm your plugins load with meta version and sm version.
Tip: If you only need to fix one setting or file, edit or delete that file in Files instead of a full reset. To change map or rotation without wiping everything, see Change the Map.
