Valheim Patch 1.0.14 — Keybinding Overhaul, Server Join & Save Fixes, and Performance Gains

Iron Gate followed up the first Valheim 1.0 hotfixes with Patch 1.0.14, published on September 17, 2026. This one touches "a little bit of everything, from keybindings to music" — and, more importantly for anyone running a world, it fixes a set of multiplayer, save and server-join bugs alongside real graphics optimizations.

Iron Gate notes that internal restrictions mean the patch takes a few days to reach every platform, but that crossplay remains functional throughout, so mixed-platform groups can keep playing together regardless of when each storefront catches up.

As always, the full, unabridged notes come straight from the developerscheck out the entire changelog from the developers of Valheim for the complete list.

🎮 Quality of Life

  • Several new keybinding options for the keyboard: an alternate dodge key, hotbar rebinding (on top of the default 1–8), support for rebinding the radial wheel, and support for removing keybinds entirely.
  • A new accessibility setting to toggle blocking.
  • A toggle in Gameplay settings to skip the intro cinematic on startup — a small thing that matters a lot when you restart a server for the tenth time in an evening.
  • Attack rotation now snaps toward the intended attack direction when the "attack towards look direction" option is enabled, not just when it is disabled.
  • Motion Sensor and Sheath keybinds swapped on gamepad, returning Sheath to its original bind — Motion Sensor now activates with the alt key plus the Sheath button.

⚡ Optimizations

  • Improved GPU performance when tessellation is disabled, by eliminating unnecessary GPU overhead in that case.
  • Heightmap shadows are now calculated more accurately and at a lower performance cost.
  • Optimized the main menu particle systems to reduce overdraw.
  • Multiple GPU performance improvements on Switch 2.

🌐 Multiplayer, Servers & Saves

These are the fixes server owners have been waiting for:

  • Disabled biomedata caching, fixing a bug where the cache could end up in an invalid state and make it impossible to join remote servers. If your community hit "cannot connect" errors on dedicated servers, this is the fix.
  • Fixed a bug where characters didn't save correctly when manually pressing Save while playing on a server hosted by someone else.
  • Fixed a bug where terrain modifications by players or monsters could cause performance and portal issues in multiplayer — including terrain seams and terrain modifications becoming undone.
  • Fixed a problem where players could be mistakenly marked as temporary cheaters, which incorrectly flagged items dropped by monsters they killed as having a cheated origin.
  • Cheated stackable items no longer stack with regular items, preventing clean stacks from being "corrupted" into a cheated state — relevant for any server that has ever had admin-spawned supplies in circulation.
  • The Persistent Events devcommand ("pevents") is now actually behind the devcommands toggle and no longer available in the console by default.
  • Fixed various crashes and errors that could happen in rare circumstances.

⚔️ Combat, World & Building Fixes

  • PlayerBase effect on some build pieces has been increased to block enemies more — base defence gets stronger on the affected pieces.
  • Fixed inaccuracies in stick input pre-processing that made controller movement heavily weighted towards axis-aligned directions and 30% too slow diagonally.
  • Jotun Puffs and Magecaps no longer respawn.
  • Fixed errors when using the grappling hook's secondary attack on creatures.
  • Fixed various issues with Ashlands water (VFX, and water damage not stopping).
  • Fixed the Deep North battleaxes tool tier — they can now cut all the trees.
  • Placeable boulders now persist, are only placeable on the ground, break if the ground they stand on goes away, and give ground-level support.
  • The Ballista now accepts all new trophies — every Deep North enemy, plus Bjorn and Vile.
  • Fixed a bug where the Helmet of the Protector was craftable directly via the Black Forge.
  • Timberwood build pieces no longer incorrectly show up in earlier biome locations.
  • Tweaked Seal and Baby Seal colliders to better match their bodies.

🎵 Audio

  • Updated Deep North and Winding Tunnels music for better balance and to remove some clicks when looping.
  • The correct music now plays in Mörkhalla, and location music in the Deep North is mixed better.

🏆 Achievements & Platforms

  • Fixed "No time for snoozing" sometimes not unlocking in multiplayer.
  • Fixed "The Homesteader" and "The Architect" unlocking repeatedly.
  • Nintendo Switch 2: the TV output no longer drops from 120 Hz to 60 Hz while the virtual keyboard or home menu is open during online multiplayer with the balanced graphics preset, which previously caused a black screen.
  • PlayStation 5: the TV output no longer drops from 120 Hz to 60 Hz in the home menu with the balanced preset, fixing the same kind of black screen — and the "Stronger Together" achievement is now achievable.
  • Steam: fixed a bug where Steam Cloud could get stuck in an invalid state if the game crashed while saving. That one is worth knowing if you rely on cloud saves to move worlds around.

🖥️ What This Means For Your Server

  • Update for the connection fixes alone. The biomedata caching bug could stop players joining remote servers, and the "Save" bug affected character saves on servers hosted by someone else. Both are patched — so if your members reported either, this build resolves them.
  • Terrain modification issues are worth re-testing. If your world developed terrain seams or vanished dig sites from heavy building and monster damage, the multiplayer terrain fix should settle it. Update, then verify the affected areas before your community rebuilds on top of them.
  • Back up before updating. As with every 1.0 patch, take a world snapshot first, since saves migrate forward and older builds cannot read newer worlds.
  • Attendance will spike on patch day. Patch day means a full server and a queue of players — exactly when a host's CPU headroom, NVMe storage and DDoS protection matter most.
  • Crossplay still works mid-rollout, so you do not have to delay the server update waiting for every platform to catch up.

Running a long-term world? NolimitHost Valheim server hosting gives you fast high-clock CPUs, NVMe storage, DDoS protection and automated backups with one-click restore, in Frankfurt (EU) and Chicago (US).

Conclusion

Patch 1.0.14 is a broad, well-rounded cleanup: new keybinding and accessibility options, a proper keyboard-and-controller feel fix for diagonal movement, GPU and shadow optimizations, and — the part server owners care about — repairs to remote server joins, character saves and multiplayer terrain modifications. Update, back up your world first, and the tenth world gets noticeably smoother.
