Vintage Story 1.22.4/5 Server Safety Patch (r447): Exploit Fixes & Griefing Prevention

Vintage Story 1.22.4/5 (build r447) is a critical safety patch that all multiplayer server owners should install as soon as possible. This update addresses a number of in-game exploits that could allow targeted griefing on multiplayer servers.

While the exploits are limited to the in-game experience only (not affecting the server machine itself), they could be used to disrupt your community's gameplay. This patch also includes a follow-up 1.22.5 hotfix that resolves an issue where players could no longer trade with traders.

Recommended action: If you run a Vintage Story multiplayer server, update to 1.22.4/5 immediately to prevent potential griefing via the patched exploits.

Critical Security Fixes

Land Claim Permission Checks

The most important fixes in this patch relate to land claim permissions. Four specific kinds of player interactions were not properly checking for land claim permissions before this update. This means a player could potentially interact with blocks and items in claimed areas where they shouldn't have had permission. Server owners running survival multiplayer worlds should treat this as a high-priority update.

Griefing Prevention

A number of additional specific interactions did not check for player permissions, which could allow certain types of targeted griefing on multiplayer servers. While the announcement doesn't detail every single exploit vector (to prevent abuse), the scope is significant enough that the Vintage Story team issued a dedicated safety patch outside their regular update cycle.

Additional Bug Fixes

Beyond the security fixes, 1.22.4/5 includes several quality-of-life improvements and crash fixes:

Crash Fixes

  • Fixed a client crash with the message System.ArgumentException: Given pos contained NaN — this should now cover most cases that could have caused this error.
  • Fixed a rare server crash with falling snow layers — important for server stability in winter biomes.

Visual & World Fixes

  • Forgetmenot and Eidelweiss flowers had their models accidentally reverted to single-flower models — they are now back to their proper 3-flower models.
  • New mushrooms were missing meal texture assignments in JSON — now fixed.
  • Polished rock slabs had unwanted texture 'seam lines' — resolved.
  • Plain glasses and the warrior belt could sometimes have a texture conflict that made the lenses of the glasses use the leather texture — no more looking like you're wearing leather over your eyes.
  • Large lanterns had lost their ability to mount to the sailboat mast — navigation lighting restored.

Gameplay Fixes

  • Peasant slippers and brown cuffs had the same grid recipe — now properly distinguished.
  • Wrench could not be placed on forge — now fixed so you can keep your tools organized.
  • Sleeping in the devastation teleported players tens of thousands of blocks up — now resolved.
  • Crafting oddities and ghost items when using hotbar number keys to craft — fixed.
  • Axle wall-covering control now correctly uses Ctrl+right click (relevant to players who de-linked Ctrl and Sprint).
  • Cabinets loaded as part of worldgen or worldedit may have had random items and the wrong cabinet type — now fixed.
  • Fixed rare exception spam with a creature eating an item on the ground.

Tweaks

  • Pieces of fish meat now have 'fillet' at the end of their localization, to better differentiate them from forms of whole fish.
  • Small UI adjustments to the server dashboard — particularly useful for server administrators.

API Fix

  • Fixed missing forge defaults that could create broken fuels and particles.

Why Server Owners Should Update Immediately

If you run a Vintage Story multiplayer server, this patch addresses exploits that could be used to grief your players' builds and disrupt your community. The fixes to land claim permission checks are particularly important — without them, unauthorized players could interact with claimed areas in ways the land claim system was designed to prevent.

Vintage Story's multiplayer community is known for being collaborative and respectful, but having these exploits unpatched puts your server at unnecessary risk. The update is quick to install and should not introduce any compatibility issues with existing worlds or mods.

How to Update

To update your Vintage Story server to 1.22.4/5, simply log into the account manager and download the latest version. The update includes both 1.22.4 and the follow-up 1.22.5 hotfix (which resolved the trader interaction bug introduced in 1.22.4), so you'll be on the fully patched version.

If you use our Vintage Story server hosting, your server can be updated through your control panel with minimal downtime.
