Vintage Story 1.22.3 Maintenance Patch (r445): Native Apple Silicon & Bug Fixes

Vintage Story 1.22.3, a stable maintenance release (build r445), is now available for download through the account manager. This patch focuses on stability improvements, bug fixes, and — most notably — introduces native Apple Silicon support for Mac users.

Whether you're a server owner planning your next update or a player curious about what's changed, this article covers everything in the 1.22.3 maintenance patch.

Native Apple Silicon Support

The headline feature of 1.22.3 is native support for Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, and all Macs built since 2022). Previously, Mac users running Apple Silicon had to rely on the Intel build running through Rosetta 2 emulation, which caused a large number of compatibility issues and reduced performance. This native build resolves those problems and significantly improves performance on all recent Mac hardware.

Note: Mac builds for older Intel CPUs are currently unavailable in this release, but Apple Silicon users will see dramatically better stability and frame rates.

Additionally, Mac users can now run the game in "Game Mode" to further improve performance, and the crash reporter has been fixed to properly open on Mac.

Mechanical Power & Water Wheel Improvements

Several changes have been made to the mechanical power system:

  • Added various new mechanics to the Mechanical Power guides in the handbook — including metal windmill rotors, grindstones, water wheels, spur gears, and more.
  • While constructing a water wheel, the game now warns you if no rapid-flowing water is found nearby.
  • Construction of a water wheel cannot proceed if its rotation would be blocked by solid blocks — no more building a wheel that can't spin.
  • Breaking an axle block no longer drops unstackable blocks (e.g. planks with different orientation).
  • Wall-covered axles are now properly considered full blocks.

Gameplay Tweaks

  • Redtop grass is no longer a food for bees or butterflies (it's wind-pollinated, after all).
  • Tamed elk no longer eat your crops — your farming efforts are finally safe.
  • Large entity selections (above 100) via command are now auto-declined if the caller lacks the "largeentityselection" privilege, preventing accidental performance hits.
  • Rusted heavy gates now require tier 2 (copper) or better pick to break.
  • Pigs and sheep will no longer be aggressive after generation 2 — peaceful domesticated herds.
  • Firestarter and snow shovel are now tool-rackable, making organization easier.

Bug Fixes

The 1.22.3 maintenance patch addresses a wide range of bugs:

  • Fixed rare crashes when interacting with lanterns.
  • Fixed missing language strings for Blue Meanie and Laughing Jim mushrooms in recipes.
  • Fixed pulverizer caps being invisible after reloading a world.
  • Fixed wrong interaction help for Cabinet doors and Boat construction (if shift/ctrl keys not set to sneak/sprint).
  • Fixed typo in the worm grunter handbook entry.
  • Fixed inability to place a partially-full jug onto a shelf with another liquid container.
  • Fixed quenching handbook guide incorrectly stating shift+right click (it's just right click) and that "some" metal would be lost on a failed quench (in fact, all the metal is lost).
  • Fixed zip archived mods being able to write files to arbitrary locations during decompression — a notable security fix for mod users.
  • Fixed players being able to interact with auctions from far away.
  • Fixed cupronickel and electrum metal plates having the wrong smelting ratio.
  • Fixed crash on invalid forge block entity or invalid forge block type.
  • Fixed mods that had game/survival/creative as a dependency showing as incompatible since 1.22, even when actually compatible.
  • Fixed mod incompatible warning icon only showing the second time the Mod Manager was opened.
  • Fixed dungeons not keeping their minimum distance to story locations or other structures (since 1.22.0-rc.9).
  • Fixed player spawning heavily favoring locations closer to the center of the spawn radius.
  • Fixed crash when using arrow keys to navigate an inventory with no slots.
  • Fixed rounding errors causing a full hunger bar to show as only 1499 satiety.
  • Fixed horsetail incorrectly described as a flower.
  • Fixed alum missing an in-container texture.
  • Fixed tile slabs missing placement mode recipes.
  • Fixed rawhide tunic using the wrong texture.
  • Fixed grindstone handbook entry mentioning multiple levels of grinding, which were not implemented.
  • Fixed certain fish (crappie, chubs, shad, and tilapia) when cooked whole cooking into 'medium cooked fish' instead of a single piece of cooked fish.

API Changes

  • Added minGeneration and maxGeneration AI task conditions for execution.
  • Fixed crash when burning something in the firepit that rots into something that doesn't rot.
  • Fixed inability to properly empty contents of a liquid container onto the ground.

How to Update

To update your Vintage Story client or server to 1.22.3, simply log into the account manager and download the latest version. Windows, Linux, and Apple Silicon Mac builds are all available.

If you're running a Vintage Story server, this maintenance patch is a safe, recommended update — the fixes are broadly beneficial and should not introduce any compatibility issues with existing worlds or mods.
