Valheim Patch 1.0.16 — Terrain Modification Fix, Achievement Fixes & Enemy Spawn Tuning

Valheim Patch 1.0.16 is a smoothing-out patch — the kind that fixes the things you keep running into while playing rather than adding anything new. The two headline areas are terrain modification and achievements, with a solid batch of Deep North and platform fixes alongside them.

As usual with the 1.0 rollout, Iron Gate notes that internal restrictions mean the patch takes a few days to reach every platform, but crossplay stays functional throughout — so you can keep playing with friends regardless of platform while the rollout catches up.

The full notes come straight from the developers — check out the entire changelog from the developers of Valheim.

🌍 Terrain Modification Fixed — With a Manual Cleanup Step

The big one: a bug that caused terrain modifications to revert in the Deep North after unloading the area has been fixed. Iron Gate openly apologises that this one went back and forth for a while.

You may still need to repair existing damage by hand. The fix stops modifications from reverting going forward, but terrain seams already created in your world may need pickaxing, flattening with the hoe, or simply walking over the snow to clear them. Worth telling your community before they report "the dig site is broken again".

Two related terrain bugs were also fixed: snow deposits from trees could raise the terrain around them, and rolling snowballs far away from the player could produce terrain seams and in some cases crashes.

🏆 Achievement Fixes

  • Fixed the Child of Odin achievement not unlocking correctly.
  • Fixed a case where the Comfort is King achievement was not unlocking correctly.
  • Excluded the unobtainable Blue Mushroom from The Gourmet achievement. A completion-blocking issue for anyone hunting the full achievement list — and a good example of why hunting parties on servers were stalled.

⚔️ Enemy Spawns & Combat

  • Fixed a bug that could cause way too many enemies to spawn, especially during raids. The most consequential fix for anyone running a populated world — an over-spawning raid is exactly the sort of thing that ends a Friday night badly.
  • Fixed a bug where smoke from fires could push some enemies in unintended ways.
  • Deep North boss fight: fixed certain spawns appearing outside the boss area, and fixed spawns rendering incorrectly when standing in certain places.

🎒 Items & Building

  • Fixed a bug where item variants were not applied visually to items on item and armour stands — shields and the like now display their actual variant. Directly relevant on community servers with shared display stands.
  • Placeable rocks and boulders no longer take rain damage.
  • Tree logs in the Deep North now move more consistently when rolling over snow.

⚡ Graphics & Performance

  • Tessellation is now disabled in the "low" graphics preset — a change worth knowing if your community runs low-spec settings, since it alters both the look and the performance profile of that preset.
  • Updated localization.

🖥️ Stability & Platform Fixes

  • Fixed an error and potential crash in the online session Player List.
  • Switch 2 and PlayStation 5: fixed a bug where motion controls activation was inconsistent.
  • Switch 2: fixed banding artifacts appearing on textures of objects very close to the camera.
  • Mac App Store: fixed backups not being restorable via the Manage Saves menu — a genuinely important fix for anyone relying on that route to recover a world.

🖥️ What This Means For Your Server

  • Update, then do a terrain sweep. The revert bug is fixed, but the damage already done to your world needs manual repair. Pickaxes, hoes and a walk through the snow are cheaper than rebuilding a base that sank into a seam.
  • The raid spawn fix is the one your players will feel. Too many enemies spawning during raids was a stability and difficulty problem at once — on a busy server, that's both a crash risk and a "the game is broken" complaint.
  • Your achievement hunters can finally progress. Two broken achievements fixed and an unobtainable item removed from the requirement. If members were stuck on The Gourmet or Comfort is King, that's now unblocked.
  • Display stands show the right variants again. Small, but on a community server where people show off shields, they notice.
  • Back up before you roll out. Every 1.0 patch so far has carried at least one save-format or terrain risk, and this one touches terrain directly. Take a snapshot with one-click restore available before you update a live world.
  • Crossplay still works mid-rollout — you don't have to delay the server update waiting for every platform to catch up.

Conclusion

Patch 1.0.16 is a repair patch, and a welcome one: Deep North terrain modifications no longer revert after an area unloads (though existing seams may need manual fixing), raid over-spawning is fixed, and three achievement blockers are resolved — Child of Odin, Comfort is King, and the unobtainable Blue Mushroom requirement in The Gourmet. Add item-stand variant rendering, no more rain-damaged boulders, tessellation disabled on the low preset, Deep North boss spawn corrections, a Player List crash fix, and a Mac App Store backup restore fix.
