Minecraft Bedrock Edition 26.40: Abandoned Camps, Dappled Forest, Cushions & More

Another Minecraft: Bedrock Edition update is here! This release brings a wide range of bug fixes, gameplay improvements, accessibility updates, and technical enhancements for creators. From boats requiring fewer hits to break, to minecarts back in order, there's plenty packed in — plus experimental features including the dappled forest, abandoned camps, and cushions.

Let's dive into Bedrock Edition 26.40.

Known issue: Arrows shot downwards get stuck in the player's own hitbox (MCPE-240527).

🏕️ Drop 3 Experimental Features

Abandoned Camp

The Abandoned Camp is a new kind of structure found across a huge range of biomes — from Meadow and Cherry Grove to Forest, Taiga, Swamp, Savanna, Wooded Badlands, and Pale Garden. Each biome has its own variant of the structure, with certain pieces generic across all variants.

  • Chests and Barrels with loot can be found at Abandoned Camps.
  • Now generates in Pale Garden and Flower Forest biomes.
  • Straw Beds can be found in Abandoned Camps.
  • Updated to place procedural trees, with a fix for wrong potion names in loot tables.

Dappled Forest

The Dappled Forest is a new forest biome found near cold biomes:

  • Poplar Trees and fallen Poplar Trees generate here, in three color variants (Red, Orange, Yellow leaves) with matching falling-leaf particles.
  • Shelf Mushrooms and Red Shrubs generate here.
  • Passive/neutral mobs (Sheep, Chicken, Cow, Pig, Rabbit, Fox) spawn using their cold variants where applicable.
  • A Dappled Forest variant of the Abandoned Camp structure can be found here.

Poplar Trees

  • A new tree type that comes in three color variations (Red, Orange, Yellow).
  • Poplar Leaves drop Poplar Saplings that randomly grow into any of the three variants.
  • Saplings can be found in trades with the Wandering Trader.
  • Poplar Logs craft into a new set of Poplar wood blocks.
  • Forest ambience sounds are tied to the Poplar Leaf blocks.
  • Known issue: Some Vibrant Visuals settings are not correctly applied to Poplar Leaf blocks.

Red Shrub & Shelf Mushroom

  • Red Shrub is a decorative plant found in patches; usable in the Composter and grows with Bone Meal.
  • Shelf Mushroom generates on Poplar Trees (small & large sizes), used to make Stews, found in Wandering Trader trades, and has a slight bounciness when stepped on. A large one drops two items when broken.

Wool Stairs & Slabs, Cushion, Straw Bed

  • Wool Stair and Wool Slab blocks added in all 16 wool colors.
  • Cushion — a placed, interactable item you can sit on, crafted in 16 colors from 3 Wool Slabs. Cushions align to the grid, sit on any flat surface, can't move, and break if their support is removed. Known issue: Cushions aren't generating in Abandoned Camps yet.
  • Straw Bed — a new bed that lets you sleep through the night without setting your spawn. Used once, then destroyed. Can't be used in the Nether or End. Crafted from 3 Hay Bales, yielding 4 Straw Beds.

🎮 Gameplay & Items

  • Minecart entity separation now works as it did prior to 1.21.0.
  • Boats require fewer hits to break and regenerate damage accrued, matching Java Edition.
  • Arrow damage now scales with velocity instead of being fully randomized.
  • Crossbow arrows now share the same damage behavior regardless of the firing mob; only bow-fired arrows (e.g. Skeletons) scale with difficulty.
  • Player names now show as blue when in a party.
  • Mobs released from a Bucket no longer carry over their state (fall damage, burning, suffocation, cooldowns, status effects, targets, movement).
  • The "Bounce" music disc can now be found in abandoned mineshafts with the "Villager Trade Rebalancing" experiment enabled.
  • Shulker boxes and Bundles play their pickup-pop animation correctly; bed item sprites updated to match blocks.
  • Book and quill from pre-26.30 worlds no longer freeze the game; Arrows of Harming now correctly removed on hit.

🐛 Sulfur Cube Fixes

  • No longer push each other on adjacent blocks, or absorb a block from further than 8 blocks away.
  • A Bucket of a named Sulfur Cube now includes its absorbed Block in the label.
  • Can no longer freeze with a block absorbed, and no longer destroy snow layers on spawn from a Bucket.
  • A Magma-absorbed Sulfur Cube no longer damages actors wearing Frost Walker boots.
  • No longer considered hostile — they don't prevent sleeping, don't grant the Monster Hunter achievement, and aren't attacked by conduits.
  • Can now spawn on the surface in a sulfur caves biome and regardless of light level.
  • Fix for sinking or not moving after ejecting their block; absorbed blocks render with the correct facing.
  • Players can no longer get soft-locked standing inside a Sulfur Cube's or Creaking's bounding box.
  • Removed Observer and Redstone Lamp from the Sulfur Cube's slow bouncy archetype.

♿ Accessibility & UI

  • Added a screen distortion option controlling nausea/Nether portal screen distortion.
  • Improved furnace screen narration and Sweet Berry Bush damage closed captions.
  • Fixed text field narration restarting on every keypress.
  • Added an underline to the focused "More options" button on the start screen.
  • Improved crafting recipe book scrolling performance and various fixes.
  • Updated the fire overlay to more closely resemble Java.
  • Non-operator players on dedicated servers no longer see the world seed in Game Settings.

🎨 Graphical & Stability

  • Multiple Vibrant Visuals fixes (cloud/star rendering, custom block emissive effects, Android crashes).
  • Fixed guardian/Elder guardian beams, End Crystals, enchantment glint, and projectiles with Texture Streaming.
  • Fixed a Character Creator memory leak on memory-constrained platforms.
  • Added a limit of 512 nested entries in NBT List/Compound tags to prevent crashes.
  • Game servers now attempt to self-repair some player connection issues.
  • Vanilla textures packed into brarchive files for load optimization.

☁️ Realms & World Storage

  • Realms Hub now accessible from the in-game pause menu, with Saves management (restore automatic/manual saves) directly from the Hub.
  • Added a Delete button for expired Realms and more Realms tips.
  • Added cloud backup of Windows worlds (Cloud Sync support for world data across devices).
  • New OREUI Storage Settings: Storage Status and Management.
  • Specific error modal when cloud upload fails due to full storage.

⚙️ Technical Updates (Highlights)

  • Released @minecraft/server 2.9.0, added 2.10.0-beta.
  • Released PlayerStartBreaking/CancelBreaking events, BiomeSearchOptions, LootItem.conditions, and more from beta to stable.
  • Renamed Dimension.findClosestBiome to calculateClosestBiomeFromSeed.
  • Stricter entity schema parsing for many components/goals starting in 1.26.40.
  • Vanilla fences now expose per-direction connection block states; stairs expose a minecraft:corner state.
  • New minecraft:multi_block trait released; voxel-shape based culling without experimentation for shapes.
  • Added block component minecraft:instrument_sound (released from experimental) and item component for carry-over dynamic properties (beta).
  • Dedicated server: added pack optimization CLI mode and fixed the content-log-file option (BDS-23033).
  • Commands: /tell now allows player names as targets and self-expansion for non-operators; fixed clone/fill with partial beds and multi-block.

Known Issue

  • Arrows shot downwards get stuck in the player's own hitbox (MCPE-240527).
